2026 context: after the all-time visitor record in 2025 (around 7.9 million, per TravelPulse/Discover Puerto Rico), the first months of 2026 show a slight correction in domestic SJU airport passengers (–2.2% in Jan–Apr; –4.9% in June vs 2025), per ASUR/Tourism Analytics. Even so, hotel occupancy closed 2025 at 71.0%, its highest recent level. The island remains one of the most visited Caribbean destinations for U.S. travelers.

The gateway to Puerto Rico for most travelers. The 16th-century walled district holds Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Castillo San Cristóbal, two of the most visited historical sites in the Caribbean. A free garita cart connects the main sights of the old city.
The only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. Home to nearly 100 bird species, including the critically endangered Puerto Rican parrot. The Angelito Trail leads to the natural pools of the Río Mameyes.
A local favorite for its authenticity. Playa Sucia offers panoramic views and clear water; Playa El Combate is ideal for sunset. The Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge and the fishing village of Boquerón complete the experience.

Mosquito Bay holds the Guinness World Record as the brightest bioluminescent bay on the planet. Only accessible by boat or car (via ferry from Ceiba), it is one of the most singular nighttime experiences in the Caribbean.
Flamenco Beach repeatedly ranks among the best beaches in the world. White sand, turquoise water and a half-buried M4 Sherman tank that has become an icon. A pristine setting with no major resorts.

Puerto Rico’s mountain food culture, centered on slowly roasted lechón (pork). Highway 184 in Guavate concentrates the island’s most famous lechoneras, especially busy on weekends.
