What You Need to Rent a Car in Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, so the requirements mirror mainland United States rental rules with a few local nuances. Whether you arrive at San Juan (SJU), Aguadilla (BQN), or our Arecibo office, the documentation below is required at pickup.
- A valid driver license — U.S. or international. Digital or paperless licenses must be the physical card at pickup.
- Minimum age 21. Drivers under 25 may rent select vehicles; surcharges may apply for certain categories.
- A credit or debit card in the primary driver name for the security hold and payment.
- A passport or government-issued photo ID for international visitors as secondary identification.
- A confirmed reservation reference (your JF- booking number) — we accept walk-ins but reservations guarantee availability.
Driver License Rules for Visitors
U.S. drivers may use any state-issued license. International visitors may drive on a valid foreign license for up to 90 days; an International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended but not mandatory for licenses printed in English. If your license is in another script, bring an IDP as a translation.
Provisional, learner, or temporary paper licenses are not accepted as the sole form of identification. Bring your permanent card or a passport.

Payment & Security Hold
A credit or debit card in the primary driver name is required to secure the rental. The hold amount covers the estimated rental charges plus a refundable deposit. Holds release within 3–7 business days after return depending on your bank.
Cash and prepaid cards are accepted for final payment only, not for the security hold.
Adding Additional Drivers
Additional drivers must meet the same age and license requirements and be present at pickup with their license. There is no per-driver fee for spouses or domestic partners. Other additional drivers are added at no charge — just let us know when booking.
