Driving times are approximate door-to-door segments without stops. Leave San Juan at 8:00 AM and you will reach Aguadilla with daylight to spare.
Grab the car early (8:00 AM) and take PR-22 West. If you have a spare hour, walk the walls of Old San Juan and Castillo San Felipe del Morro before hitting the road.
First beach stop: Balneario El Portal and the calm Dorado Beach coastline. Wide sand, low waves and easy parking right off PR-22 exit 24.
A natural pool enclosed by a limestone semicircle — one of the most photogenic spots on the north coast. Arrive before 11 AM to beat weekend crowds.
Wide golden beach framed by cliffs with a small inlet that locals love. Quick 45-minute stop to stretch your legs and take in the Atlantic.
The heart of the trip: Cueva Ventana (cave with a window over the valley), Cueva del Indio (Taíno petroglyphs + wild beach) and the Arecibo Lighthouse at Punta Los Morrillos. Budget 3+ hours.
Hatillo's Sardinera beach for a local, zero-crowd swim, and (if reopened on your dates) the Río Camuy Caverns — one of the largest cave systems in the hemisphere. Check availability in advance.
The north coast's most iconic beach: turquoise water, the famous painted pier and kiosks at Crash Boat; sunsets at the Punta Borinquen lighthouse ruins next to the golf course. BQN airport is 10 minutes away — perfect place to end the loop.
PR-22 is a toll highway. Our Toll Program ($15 flat, one-time) covers the rental so you can use the express lanes — usage is tabulated after the rental.
Top up the tank in San Juan and again around Arecibo — stations get sparse between towns on weekends.
Cueva Ventana and Cueva del Indio both require tickets/time — book Cueva Ventana online in advance and do the caves before lunch to dodge midday heat.
Kiosks and lechoneras are cash-friendly and close early — plan lunch before 3:00 PM in smaller towns.
Pick up at San Juan Airport (SJU), drop off at Aguadilla (BQN) or back in San Juan — unlimited mileage on every rental so the whole coast is yours.
